SurgeX Surge Protectors

There are a lot of brands of surge protectors from the very cheap to the ultra expensive and all is not created equal.  The problem is MOST surge protectors are not endurance tested by UL.  Yes, they have a UL sticker on them but this refers to that they passed the safety rating.  UL also has optional testing which will give an endurance rating.  This tells how well the product performs.  They are rated in three categories.  All SurgeX products have the best possible rating: A,1,1.

Grade (A,B,C): The amount of energy it can handle.  To get an Grade A rating it must still be functional without any degrading of the components after 1000 surges of 6000 volts and 3000 amps.  Most surge protectors use MOV protection and can't handle 1000 surges with that type of power without deteriorating.

Class (1,2,3): How much voltage will get past under the most extreme conditions.  To get a Class 1 rating it has to let under 330V pass through.  This sounds like a lot but in reality is a small spike and wouldn't harm anything.

Mode (1,2): Mode 1 means that the protection does not divert the excess surge energy to the ground wire.  When energy comes in from the ground wire it can hurt others devices connected to that same ground circuit.  So a surge protector that diverts something to ground might save the equipment it is protecting but hurt other items in your home.  Their insurance doesn't pay if it damages other items.  Most MOV type surge protectors divert to ground.  If it has a Joule rating it probably uses an MOV.

No matter which surge protector you purchase look to see if it passed the UL endurance testing and check its rating.
